The African-American Influence in American Music
Leslie Downs introduces Copper to the audience. Copper spoke and sang on the topic "The African-American Influence in American Music", delighting and deeply moving her audience.
Copper is an a capella diva who has performed from Baltimore to Las Vegas. She was influenced greatly by her mother, who sang in their home and at church. She began training on the piano at age 7 and at age 12 was enrolled in the Baltimore School for the Arts after school program where she studied viola. She was accepted in the Maryland Gifted and Talented Summer Program at Goucher University for three years running where she received intense vocal training. At 14 she studied under Nathan Carter, learning the art of directing the Young Adult Choir. At 16 she was the director of her high school Gospel Choir. At 18 she became one of the first freshmen to hold the post of Head-Directress at Delaware State University. Here she trained in classical, jazz, opera and soul. Copper believes that all forms of music can be shown in their purest form when performed a capella.
